Herr Lecture Series

The Hon. Douglas Roche, O.C. is an author, parliamentarian and diplomat, who has specialized throughout his 45-year public career in peace and human security issues. Mr. Roche was a Progressive Conservative MP, a Senator, and a Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament. He was Chairman of the United Nations Disarmament Committee at the 43rd General Assembly and is the founding Chairman of the Middle Powers Initiative. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, author of 22 books, and holds nine honourary doctorates from Canadian and America universities. He has received numerous awards for his work for peace and non- violence, including the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation for World Peace Award (Canada) and the United Nations Association's Medal of Honour.

His presentation is titled, “Hope Not Fear: Building Peace in a Fractured World.” A quick summary of his presentation:

The political turmoil in today’s world has convinced many people that peace is impossible. The election of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency and the 2016 vote in the United Kingdom to leave the European Union are the result of a populist fear of an unknown future.This lecture presents a calm assessment of the gains for peace the world has already made, strengthening us to fight back against the shrill voices of fear. Understanding the quiet successes of the substantial peace infrastructure already in place gives us the foundation on which to advance the human security agenda.
