Readiness to Learn Online
Taking an online class requires some unique skills and characteristics. Assess your readiness to learn online by answering the following questions:
-
Do you have access to a computer that runs current versions of browsers, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel software?
-
Do you have reliable Internet access at home? Are you comfortable searching and browsing the Internet? Note: If using a work computer, you may be blocked access to some sites and will need to work with your IT personnel to clear some restrictions.
-
Are you ready to commit to regular times for study? A 3-credit course will require 80-120 hours of time.
-
Are you self-motivated in completing tasks? Do you manage your time without reminders? Are you able to plan your schedule to meet deadlines?
-
Are you prepared to communicate primarily through email or through your course space, primarily asynchronously? Are you ready to establish communication with your teacher by sharing phone, text, and email contact information?
-
Are you comfortable reading and writing to learn? Can you follow written instructions?
-
Do you have reasonable supports for learning online? Family? Employer? Mentor/colleagues?
If you can honestly and confidently answer YES to most of these questions, then you may be ready to study online.
If you cannot confidently answer YES to most of these questions, then online learning may NOT be for you.
