Sakala Success Centre

Burman University has partnered with REES (Respect, Educate, Empower Survivors) to provide an online reporting tool for students to document incidents of sexual violence on campus. This option allows a student to create a record of an incident and provides a variety of reporting options. Creating a report on REES is NOT the same as making a disclosure or complaint.

Making a Disclosure 

• A disclosure refers to an individual with lived experience speaking about their experience with another individual. A disclosure is not the same as a formal complaint. A disclosure does not initiate a formal process nor does it initiate an investigation.

Making a complaint

• A student who has experienced an incident of gender-based violence may create a record of the incident using the REES reporting option. The student can submit a copy of the Record using the Connect to My Campus option.  
• Once staff from the SSC receive a report, they will meet with the Complainant (the individual who submitted the Report) to discuss further options.

Reporting Options with REES

Create a Record

• You can Create a Record without choosing a reporting option. Your Record will be securly stored in REES until you are ready to take the next step.
• Records stored in REES cannot be accessed by REES or Burman University. Only you can access your Record unless you choose to send it as a Connect to My Campus.

Anonymous Report

• An Anonymous Report allows an individual to share information about an incident of sexual harassment, misconduct or assault without identifying themselves, or identifying the person who has harmed them.
• Anonymous Reports will include only the multiple-choice questions and gender questions from your Record. Anonymous Report data will be provided by REES to Burman University to measure the incidence and identify patterns of sexual violence on campus, with the goal of improving policy, supports or responses to sexual violence on campus.
• Because an Anonymous Report does not include any identifying information about the persons involved, it cannot initiate an investigation, and Burman University does not have the ability to follow up with you directly.

Connect to My Campus

• Connect to My Campus allows you to reach out to the Sakala Success Centre at Burman University. You can receive support, resources, and information or discuss the formal complaint process.
• There is no time limit to Connect to My Campus. You can Create a Record to document an incident of sexual violence and take time to consider your options before making any decisions. The staff at the Sakala Success Centre are here for you.

Repeat Perpetrator Identification (RPI)

• Repeat Perpetrator identification (RPI) is a feature of REES that helps to identify a person whose behavior has harmed multiple people.
• You provide identifying information about the person that is stored in a database. If more than one individual identifies the same person has harmed them, a match is made and Burman University is notified.
